Stefan Olsson, Esther Vergeer & David Wagner

The Swedish Stefan Olsson won his first title in Namur against the Austrian Martin Legner. Martin had started the match very well when it started raining. The match had to be continued indoor. This changed completely the course of the match. On hard court, Olsson was the best and Legner could never impose his game.

Esther Vergeer wins her 10th consecutive Belgian Open against her compatriot Korie Homan (7-5 6-3) and continues her incredible series of victories since 2003.

David Wagner wins his fifth Belgian Open in a row against the Swedish Johan Andersson.

The Belgian Open welcomed Christophe ROCHUS and David BASILE

spacerChristophe ROCHUS and David BASILE respectively played with Martin LEGNER (Austria - N°7 worldwide) and Frédéric CATTANEO (France-N°10 worldwide) on the occasion of the traditional exhibition match of the Belgian Open.

This exhibition is a good opportunity for the public to discover wheelchair tennis. This sport is identical to valid tennis with one exception: the players are entitled to let the ball bounce twice before hitting.

spacerOnce more, the event was very successful and a lot of people attended this high-quality match. They could realise how difficult this sport is when Christophe and David decided to play in a wheelchair. Christophe had many difficulties to handle the wheelchair but he accepted the challenge with a lot of humour.

The BELGIAN OPEN is Awarded European Recognition!

The BELGIAN OPEN, a wheelchair tennis international tournament taking place in Namur every year in July, was chosen by the French institution "L'Agence pour l'Education par le sport" as an event particularly representative of the initiatives aiming at integrating disabled through sport.

spacerSince its creation in 1996, "L'Agence pour l'Education par le sport" has supported and developed the social use of sport. It has set up "Fais-Nous Rêver", a programme promoting sport initiatives in four major fields: education to citizenship, professional integration, accessibility to sport and integration of disabled. In 2004, it decided to extend its operations throughout Europe by launching the programme EUROPA EDUCASPORT.

On Monday 24 October, a special day dedicated to "Sport and Disability" was organised in Hasselt on the occasion of the WTA tournament « GAZ DE FRANCE STARS ». spacerThrough a press conference and a debate, the floor was given to several people working for the integration of disabled through sport. The major speakers were: Luc BOUVEROUX, President of the BELGIAN OPEN, and Scott McINNES, director of the tournament, Anne-Catherine MARGOT, Fédération Multisport Adapté in Belgium, and Ryadh SALEM, French wheelchair basket-ball champion and president of the French association CAPSAAA (Cap Sport Art Adventure Amitié), which ensures the prevention and tries to increase young people's awareness to problematics related to handicap in France.

The key moment of the day was the exhibition match between Dutch player Esther VERGEER,spacer number 1 in the world for the last 5 years and undefeated this year, and French player Michael JEREMIASZ, who has become number 1 in the world after his success in the US Open. The crowd of about 1000 people expected an easy win from the French player but the exceptional skills of Esther Vergeer proved otherwise and he had to show his tremendous talent to win the set 7-6. Both players delighted the public of the Ethias Arena’s centre court.

For those who missed the exhibition, you are most welcome to join us for the next edition of the BELGIAN OPEN from 18 to 23 July 2006 in Namur (TC Géronsart).

Exhibition Match

The mixed double exhibition match opposing Maaike Smit (ranked 4th in the world - wheelchair), and David Basile (ranked top 500) to Michael Jeremiasz (ranked 3rd in the world - wheelchair), and Daphné Van de Zande (two times Belgian champion) was one of the key events of the Belgian Open. The players produced a high quality display alternating superb crossed volleys, passing shots and drop shots. Unfortunately, afternoon showers forced the organisers to move the match to the indoor courts of Géronsart.  Some 250 people joined the party for a fascinating show of 1.5 hours after which all promised to come back for other wheelchair matches. Michael and Daphné won the match after a superb drop shot by Michael Jeremiasz, but the real victory is on the human side. The atmosphere after the match was tremendous and passionate conversations on the tennis achievements of our champions lasted very long in the evening.
